Color and Cinema

A technical and aesthetic history of color in cinema.

In this presentation we will attempt to make a brief reference to the technical and aesthetic history of color in cinema. From the beginnings of the moving image and the first films of Edison and Lumiere, color makes its appearance and establishes the foundations of its theoretical and ideological semantics.

Technological advances made color film production possible during the golden age of Hollywood's major studios, and it has remained a part of commercial production ever since.

Multiple dimensions: aesthetic, emotional, ideological, concerning the use of color in cinema will be part of the discussion, while we will also see cases of specific creators and their relationship with color.

Finally, through multiple examples we will try to understand the tangible correlation of color with the very meaning of the cinematic image.
