Animated Documentaries:
A peculiar kind of cinema

The film genre we call animated documentary invokes the ontological dichotomy posed by the moving images of cinema: representation or reality.

With a history of 100 years since The Sinking of Lusitania (1918, Winsor McKay) this peculiar species is unexpectedly long-lived. With the advent of the new millennium, animated documentaries are flourishing in the field of film production and are a field of research for the survival of the real in the cinematic image.

That is why it is worth getting to know some important films of this category, in an attempt to describe the aesthetic characteristics and introduce the theoretical framework for the animated documentary.

Presentation: Dr. Charalambos Charalambous
