Time and Cinematic Narrative

"Time and Cinematic Narrative" by Dr. Charalambo Charalambous.

During the presentation, phenomena related to the spatiotemporal construction of narrative in cinematic examples starting from early cinema will be discussed. We will trace typical forms of narrative concerning classic films from the golden age of film studios and see the counter-paradigm proposed by art cinema. Finally, we will discuss ontological implications for cinematic representation, the crisis that results from the subversion of the linear (spatio-temporal) narrative structure.

Charalambos Charalambous was born in Paphos in 1980. He received his MA from the Drama and Film Department of the University of Exeter in 2006, for the thesis Trikymia - a creative documentary that explores the boundaries between the representational methods of film narrative and documentary . In 2011 he received a PhD from the University of Kent for his thesis: The truth-machine: continuity and the ontology of the moving image of cinema. In the context of research in relation to cinematic representation, the experimental documentary The Anthology of Easter received a grant from the I.F. Kostopoulos Foundation.

Special thanks to the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education & Culture, as well as the Youth Makerspace Larnaka for supporting the event.
